Indie labels: the best of the best

It is these labels that release interesting and unusual music. Have you ever noticed a small logo on the back of album covers of your favorite bands? This logo may be a sign of quality and good taste.

We will talk about the coolest of them: from the labels of Los Angeles and New York to the labels of London and Manchester, from Berlin and beyond.

Matador. In the history of Matador – the coolest representatives of the world of rock, indie and generally interesting music. Matador is a quality mark, in addition to this, the label builds excellent relationships with musicians, and it is with them that Interpol, Belle & Sebastian, Perfume Genius, Darkside, Cat Power, Savages, Pavement and Fucked Up work.

4AD. Real representatives of the founding fathers of indie labels. It was 4AD that introduced us to the Pixies, Camera Obscura, Beirut, TV On The Radio, and St Vincent. The label is famous for its excellent taste, which explains why today they release Ariel Pink, Atlas Sound, Bon Iver, Camera Obscura, Daughter, Deerhunter, Efterklang, Future Islands, Gang Gang Dance, Grimes, Indians, Iron & Wine, Lo-Fang, Merchandise, The National, Purity Ring, Scott Walker, SOHN, Twin Shadow and Tune-Yards.

Dirty Hit. Relatively young compared to other labels, Dirty Hit was created only in 2009, but for all these several years it has been creating good taste in the audience and creating trends in the world of music by releasing albums from The 1975, Wolf Alice, Marika Hackman and Benjamin Francis Leftvich . These guys definitely intuitively feel good music.

DFA James Murphy knows everything: make coffee, make films, play them, produce, remix, sing in a band and manage a record company. He created the DFA with his friends Tim Goldsworthy and Jonathan Galkin before the popularity of LCD Soundsystem. It all started with the 12th single of The Rapture “House Of Jealous Lovers”, after which the DFA list included Hot Chip, LCD Soundsystem, Arcade Fire, Hercules And Love Affair, Factory Floor, Liquid Liquid, Holy Ghost, The 2 Bears, Shit Robot and many other groups forming modern dance rock.

Hyperdub This company was created in 2004 by dub producer Kode9. Legendary producers work on the label, while the record company itself works with Burial and Zomby, Fatima Al Qadiri and Jessy Lanza.

Hotflush Recordings. Founded in 2003 by an important figure in the world of dance music Scuba, Hotflush promotes the best of underground dubstep, electronics and house, releasing albums by Mount Kimbie, Joey Orbison, Lando Kal, Paul Wolford and Sepalcure.

Gringo. Record company from Nottingham Gringo took under their wing some of the best representatives of alternative rock. These include the noise rock duo That Fucking Tank, the weird Gray Hairs and the psychedelic quartet Sauna Youth. Gringo works with truly eccentric and notable musicians.

Numbers Glasgow Numbers is an association of clubs, labels and individuals who have decided to create a cool company that will produce cutting-edge electronic music. Besides the fact that Numbers owns some of the best nightclubs in the UK, the company also produces artists such as Jackmaster (who, incidentally, is the co-founder of the company), SOPHIE, Jamie xx and Mosca.

PMR One of the first to record this company, founded in London in 2011, released albums by Jesse Weir and Disclosure. Disclosure is now taking over the world, and Jesse Weir wears the crown of the neo-soul queen. The label features Julio Bashmore, Two Inch Punch, Cyril Khan and Javeon.

LuckyMe. Glasgow today introduces us to the newest and most sought-after electronic and hip-hop music. LuckyMe, founded in 2007, works with Hudson Mohawk (co-founder of the label), Baauer, Cid Rim, Machinedrum, Jacques Green, Rustie, and indeed with almost all modern electronic artists. In addition to music, the label is also involved in art and design: LuckyMe has a visual arts studio.

Young Turk. The label was founded in 2006 as a partner of the record company XL Recordings. The label released The xx, SBTRKT, FKA twigs, Sampha and Wavves.

O Genesis. Tim Burgess is probably the busiest person in the indie world because, in addition to running O Genesis, he owns the Tim Peaks coffee house and performs solo with The Charlatans. And this variety of activities does not affect the label, which is developing well. Speaking about the music of Tim Burgess himself, his solo albums “Oh No I Love You, Slowgun” and “Hatcham Social” are especially good.

K Records. The company was founded in Olympia, Washington, in 1982. The label is known for its anti-corporate identity and passion for underground punk culture. Beck and Modest Mouse albums were released on the label. K Records had a big influence on the grunge scene, Kurt Cobain even had a tattoo with the label logo. In 2014, Jeremy Jay released his magnificent album “Abandoned Apartments” just on K Records.
