Laughing Sad: An Interview with Daughter

The British trio with Elena Tonra, led by the second album “Not To Disappear”, is again exploring the depths of melancholy.

Despite this, Daniel Koch took an extremely funny interview from Elena and drummer Remy Agilella.

Many people have known this since adolescence: you take your current experiences, make a mixtape or play a playlist with songs that are especially sunken in your soul – and as a result, the recipient of this gift begins not only not to melt from tenderness, but to look into his eyes with the words “With you “Is everything all right? Are you depressed? Do you want to lay hands on yourself there?”

Probably one of the greatest misconceptions is that people who listen or play melancholy music are constantly sad and can endure the burden of days only thanks to antidepressants. Often it happens just the opposite, as, for example, in the case of Daughter, who in January released their second album “Not To Disappear” and a video for the song “Doing The Right Thing”, from which you can roar a beluga. In the short film, Ian Forsythe and Jane Pollard show the everyday life of an old man whose wife is suffering from senile dementia.

Vocalist and songwriter Elena Tongra addresses this topic and, in terms of lyrics, she sings on behalf of her wife:

Then I will lose my children
Then I will lose my love
Then I will sit in silence.
Let the images pour from the TV, and float through the room.
A whisper from one ear comes out of the other.

There is nothing wrong with crying about this refrain, and there is nothing surprising in telling your friend that you can’t watch this video until the end, because you have a similar situation in your family.

However, Elena Tonra and drummer Remy Agilella (guitarist and co-producer Igor Hafely at that time gave an interview to another publication) greet the author of the article in the same way as at the last 3 meetings: they are sincerely friendly, cheerful, charming and laugh out loud every now and then interview time. For example, when Elena said:

“Many people think that I wear only black and hide under a veil from neighbors, who weep at when they meet, if they want to talk to me … What a crap! That’s why I write so dark music: when it covers me mood, the creative process begins, with the help of which I create a song. It’s already practically therapy. But nevertheless I don’t consider myself a sad person. My songs are sad, melancholy – this is undeniable, but I think that there are optimistic in our music When I write particularly depressing lines, Remy and Igor They begin to groan, but then there is a joint work, during which we will try to counter the negative information, positive music. We like it. ”

Remy agrees:

“We’re not just making it up. When we are on tour, many fans say how our songs helped them. Nobody ever made a complaint like“ Because of you, I feel like shit. ”

Both laugh again before Elena sums up:

“There is a misconception that sad music is saddled with negativity. This can be felt today just because of empty pop music, which is written only to entertain. On the other hand, I absolutely do not care if you consider us depressed kids : I like what we do. ”

And in this they are getting better: the dazzlingly beautiful debut of “If You Leave” with the eclipsing all the rest of the tracks “Youth” and “Smother” is beautiful, but it sounds somewhat monotonous. On “Not To Disappear,” Daughter is presented with constant surprises. The very first track “New Way” already makes a deceitful feat: at first it sounds like good old songs, it suddenly stops – at the moment when Elena sluggishly says “I need new ways to spend time” and blows you with a powerful guitar riff, the acoustic equivalent of which English is the word “uplifting”.

“Alone With You” is a kind of poetic expression of hatred for one’s own ego, which takes too much time – it’s an indie pop flavored with electronics, while “No Care” is a track that is absolutely not intended for the dance floor. What a wonderful contrast in the lines:

Nobody wants to dance with me
Because all I can do is beat.
I always cling so
Like I’m drowning with dead hands around his neck.
I would rather stand quietly leaning against the wall.

It would be funny to imagine flirting while Elena sings:

Oh, this only happened when we fucked.
And I don’t remember that well
As if my spine reminded me of her
And you said that you were troubled.

Although it is possible that the night will be especially good then – you have already listened to the worst case scenario. Elena emphasized that it was this change that had a really important role and the choice of a new producer, Nicolas Vernes, had a significant influence on their work.

“Our debut album was produced by Igor alone. This time I wanted someone who is not part of the group to do this,” says Elena. “We liked the result of Nicolas’s collaboration with Deerhunter and Animal
